FAQ

Artwork & Files FAQ

What type of files can I send?

We recommend saving as a PDF file. You may also send the file in the following types: JPG, JPEG, TIF, TIFF, EPS, and PNG.

We prefer that you send PDF with embedded or outlined fonts. PDF files are easier to handle and will likely speed up your turn-around. Remember to flatten your files before uploading.

For Roll Labels, we recommend designing:
• vector files (e.g. EPS or PDF)
• 300 DPI or higher
• use black (100% K)
• for fine lines and text smaller than 9pt, use black (100% K) only

What color mode should my files be?

If you send us an RGB file, there is a chance that a color shift may occur and you may not be satisfied with your job.

You should always start and finish your designs in CMYK color mode.

RGB vs CMYK

What resolution should my file be?

Low resolution files may be printed as is or will be placed on hold until we receive new files, slowing your turn-around.

We only accept 300 dpi files and no less. For more information on resolution, please visit our print specifications page.

Low Resolution vs High Resolution

How should I set up my bleed?

Bleed must extend past the cut-line and will be trimmed from the product during the final cutting phase. When the image is required to extend all the way to the edge, bleed is needed to preserve the finished look and the quality of the final product.

Please keep all text at least 0.125" inside the cut-line.

– The bleed for Standard Products is 0.125".
– The bleed for Booklets and Presentation Folders is 0.25".

Coroplast, PVC, Foam Core, Car Magnets, Banner Stands, and Large Posters:
We require a 0.5 inch bleed on all sides. If ordering at 24 inch by 18 inch, your file size should be 25 inches by 19 inches to allow for bleed.

Loose Outdoor Banners, Indoor Banners, and Canvas Banners:
We request that no bleed or crop marks are placed. Make your file to the size ordered (or proportional).

If ordering hems, leave a 2 inch safe zone on all sides. Expect to lose between 1/8 inch to 2 inches per side with banners.

Mounted Canvas:
It is highly recommended to use our templates for mounted canvas. The bleed requirement is 2 inches per side.

Flags:
It is highly recommended to use our templates for Flags. We require a 0.5 inch bleed on all sides. Leave a 2 inch safe zone on all sides and the pole pocket area.

For a full product description, please click on the individual product name.

Table Covers:
It is highly recommended to use our templates for Table Runners and Table Throws. We require a 0.5 inch bleed on all sides. Leave a 1 inch safe zone on all sides. Table Covers come with sewn 1" hems on all sides, white thread.

Polyester Banners:
We require a 0.5 inch bleed on all sides. If ordering at 24 inch by 18 inch, your file size should be 25 inches by 19 inches to allow for bleed. Avoid having borders on the artwork, as the material may stretch during the heat transfer process which may result in uneven borders.

Bleed Setup

Do you accept borders on jobs?

Yes, but if the border is too close to the cutline, it may be cut off-center slightly. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

We cut through many sheets at a time, so watch your borders to avoid an unwanted mistake.

Border Setup

How should I set up my file for proper rotation?

We require print ready files with proper rotation. Files submitted are printed HEAD to HEAD as-is based off your files. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

Head to Head

Make sure to set up your files so that when we print them HEAD to HEAD the final product will read the way you would like. Also, front and back files need to be set up either both sides vertically or both sides horizontally.

Vertical Always FAQ

If you would like your back file to be upside down, please send your artwork as shown below.

If you have a fold-over or greeting card, please send your artwork as shown.

For files not properly set up, we will use our best judgment and will not be responsible for improper rotation.

How can I avoid transparency issues?

Any transparency issue can be resolved before saving your file.

Transparency FAQ

To prevent this, never use shadows, glows, or any other transparency (image or otherwise) on top of a spot color. Always convert your spot color to CMYK and flatten before sending.

Should I send a proof or sample file?

When sending artwork, do not send extra files, like proofs or samples, because they might get printed. Only send the files you need to be printed.

We are not responsible for these kinds of files being printed. Unless requested by one of our employees, DO NOT send files that you do not want to be printed.

DO NOT SEND THESE KINDS OF FILES

What is overprint, and how can it ruin my file?

Primarily used to intentionally overlap inks for a number of reasons, overprint can cause unexpected results. We suggest that you turn all overprint objects off before submitting your files.

Overprint Example

In this case, the logo was set to overprint. The colors from the logo are mixing with the colors from the background. Unexpected results may occur if you have accidentally set certain objects to overprint. Always check logos and other artwork before submitting.

Can I submit a front and back page in the same file?

No. We are now specifically set up to process one side at a time, and this requires that each side of a job must be on a separate file. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

2 FILES – 1FR, 1BK
1 FILE – FR&BK

Not separating files will cause delays and you might have to send the files again. Remember to separate the pages of your .pdf files as well.

How should I set up a Spot UV job?

When creating a Spot UV job, you must include a Spot UV template file along with the regular print file. The Spot UV template file is used to show where the UV coating needs to be applied. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

For better quality we recommend creating mask files in vector based programs such as Illustrator or CorelDRAW.

Please only use solid 100% K to indicate where you would like the UV. Do not use shadows, glows or grayscale images. White will indicate no UV.

Remember, if it’s white, you can write!

How can I make sure my blues do not come out purple?

When using a blue in your design, always make sure to leave at least a 30% difference in your Cyan and Magenta values.

100% C 100% M 0% Y 0% K

Blue is close to purple in the CMYK spectrum. Remember, use a low amount of magenta whenever using high amounts of cyan to avoid purple.

EXAMPLE: C-100 M-70 Y-0 K-0

How do I export a PDF correctly?

When exporting from any program such as Indesign or Illustrator, use these settings to make sure your .PDF files export correctly.

EXPORT SETTINGS FOR .PDF FILES

Adobe PDF Preset is set to: Press Quality

Compatibility is set to: Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)

Compress Text and Line Art is set to: Off

NOTE: Due to Adobe limitations, this preset will not convert all colors into CMYK. You must convert all colors to CMYK before saving your file.

How do I get a grayscale image in a CMYK document?

Grayscale images that are converted to CMYK will have a color shift in the final print. That shift may be green or yellow.

Always check the CMYK values of your grayscale in the final CMYK document. If there are other values other than K in your grayscale image, there is a chance that the color will vary.

To eliminate all values other than K, use your Channel Mixer (adjustment layer) in Photoshop, then click “Monochrome" and adjust accordingly.

What is rich black and how can I get it?

Rich black is an ink mixture of solid black, 100% K, with additional CMY ink values. This results in a darker tone than black ink alone. If you print black alone as 100% K, the resulting black may not be as dark as you might like.

We recommend using
C 60 M 40 Y 40 K 100
This will give you a deep, dark, rich black.

*Products that are printed with dye-sublimation (9oz Premium Polyester Banner, Flags, Table Covers, Fabric Tube Displays, etc.)
call for the following color values:
C 100 M 100 Y 100 K 100

Why does my business card crack around the edges?

Cracking of the edges of a business card sometimes occurs when the card contains high values of ink, as in dark colors.

This usually happens on a small number of cards in the run. To prevent this, use lighter colors or if you must use dark colors, use as little ink as possible.

What is banding?

Many things can cause banding. Banding can be caused by the program that it is exported from, such as Indesign or Corel. Also, too many gradient steps, for example, going from a very light color to a dark color, in a small area will cause banding.

To prevent this, check your digital files before sending them. If you use a gradient, make sure it has enough room for a smooth transition.

Banding FAQ

Why is there cracking on my scoring job?

When a job is coated with UV then scored and folded the job may begin to crack. During use, the cracks will become bigger and the ink may start to chip off.

CLOSE UP SCORING

Cracking is normal when coated jobs are scored and folded. Ordering the job without UV will help but may not prevent this. As the job is used and folded more and more, cracking will eventually happen.

How can Pantone colors affect the way my job prints?

There are three different ways Pantone colors can affect the way your job prints.

The first is by object effects, such as shadows or glows, on top of your Pantone colors. Here is what the effects will look like on screen:

Here is what the effect looks like after printing:

As you can see, when a Pantone color is under these object effects, transparency issues show up during printing. To avoid this, convert all your Pantone colors into CMYK before submitting your order.

The second way Pantone colors can affect your file is when you use transparent images. Here is what a transparent image looks like on screen:

Here is what a transparent image looks like after printing:

You can see the image is no longer transparent on top of the Pantone color. These white areas will show up during printing. To fix this issue, convert all your Pantone colors into CMYK. This must be done before submitting the order.

The last way Pantone colors can affect your order is the color conversion between a Pantone color and CMYK. If you use Pantone colors in a job that will print CMYK, your job might print with undesirable colors.

Here are some examples of what the Pantone color looks like in the Pantone color book and what the CMYK print will look like:

If you send in a job with Pantone colors, the CMYK conversion will change the Pantone color. Before sending your order, make sure all Pantone colors have been converted to CMYK.

How do I use templates?

Our templates are a great tool to create artwork that can be printed faster, easier, and more accurately. If you are using Illustrator, you can use our specialized EPS templates. If you are using something other than Illustrator, download the JPG version.

Here is what each of the lines means inside the template:

Here is what an 8.5×11 brochure template looks like:

These templates will help you identify where the cut line, bleed line, and safety line, are located along with other information so you can design your art correctly.

Some of our templates are labeled as OUT and IN. This means that there is some folding involved with the template. OUT means the FRONT of the job and IN means the BACK. During the upload part of your order, remember that OUT is the FRONT and IN is the BACK.

Here is an example of the fold-over business card template:

As you can see, OUT is the FRONT of the job and after folding, will be facing outward. You can also see the rotation of the job. The front must be positioned upside down so it can fold correctly.

Remember, do not move or change any part of the template when using them. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

How should I set up a Plastic Card job?

When designing plastic cards, it is important to keep in mind that the frosted and clear plastic cards are transparent. Also, all plastic cards come with round corners at no extra charge! Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

As you can see, the difference in the transparency is shown in the image above. The clear cards (right) are completely transparent. The frosted cards (center) are semi-transparent and cannot be seen through easily. The opaque white plastic cards (left) are solid white and not transparent at all. Keep this in mind when designing your plastic cards, it will affect how your design will print.

  • Printing on Clear and Frosted Plastic Cards will come out slightly lighter than average compared to other stocks. This is due to the plastic itself and is not a production issue.
  • When setting up a rich black value, please make sure to use C 60 M 40 Y 40 K 100 values. Do not use all 100 since it will cause problems and will not print any darker on plastic.

Since there is no white ink in CMYK, it is important to keep in mind that the frosted and clear plastic cards are transparent. The three designs above are the same as in the first picture. You will notice that the white area in the clear cards (right) and the frosted cards (center) has no ink and will show the transparent material it’s printed on. In this case, the clear cards and frosted cards white area show up with no ink on the printed piece. Also, keep in mind that all colors that are printed on clear cards or frosted cards will be transparent as well.

With the clear plastic cards, there might be a small percentage that may have light scratches. This issue originates from the manufacturer and is due to the material and handling. To help compensate for this, we run overs of the clear plastic cards to help meet the required quantity.

Clear plastic cards will come with a thin protective layer on one side that can be peeled off. This is to prevent the cards from scratching during packaging and shipping.

How do I set up a Foil job?

We can only use one type of foil per order so for example you can not order a Foil job with Gold foil on the front and Silver foil on the back. Foil job files are set up just like our Spot UV job files. You must provide a separate Foil mask file: black in the areas you want the foil and white in the areas you do not want the foil. All black areas should be solid 100% K with no other added colors. If you order a Foil job with Spot UV, you’ll need to provide separate mask files for the Foil (foil mask) and UV (spot uv mask), in which case you may be required to provide up to 6 files. Please keep in mind, however, that the Foil and UV coating can’t overlap, both should be at least 1/16" apart to avoid foil peeling off. Also, avoid using small / fine text or lines for foil objects. For best results, please make sure that foil coverage is less than 50% of the entire print side. Also, be aware that there may be up to a 1/16" shift on the placement of the foil. Keep this in mind if you are trying to align foil with other printed artwork on the card.

For better quality we recommend creating mask files in vector based programs such as Illustrator or CorelDRAW.

What is your standard round corner radius?

We offer 1/4" and 1/8" radius round corners to all of our customers. The image below shows the two different radiuses for comparison. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

What is Akuafoil and how do I set it up?

With Akuafoil, you can turn a wide range of CMYK colors into multi-colored foils. Akuafoil uses a special processed foil system that is applied under a 4/c process to create an array of foil colors. It’s simple, affordable, and makes your prints stand out from the crowd. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

For an Akuafoil job, you must include an Akuafoil mask file along with your CMYK file. The mask file indicates where the Akuafoil will be applied. The file setup is the same as Spot UV. Use 100% K where Akuafoil needs to be applied and white where the Akuafoil is not applied.

As shown above, the file on the left is the normal CMYK print file. If you want the logo to be Akuafoil, then your Akuafoil mask file should look like the file on the right. The white indicates no Akuafoil and black 100% K indicates where the Akuafoil will be applied. When uploading, please remember to upload separate files.

Here are some more things to keep in mind when creating your Akuafoil artwork:

Make sure the mask and CMYK print file are aligned. They should match exactly in size and position.

  • Akuafoil works best on lighter colors. The darker the CMYK color, the less vibrant the Akuafoil effect.
  • Do not use very thin or small text and artwork with Akuafoil. Use San Serif fonts above 12 point for best results.
    • If you have Akuafoil applied to a white area, it will have a plain silver Akuafoil look.
    • For better quality we recommend creating mask files in vector based programs such as Illustrator or CorelDRAW.

If you would like plain silver Akuafoil to print, make sure to have at least 15% K in the CMYK print file area in order to obtain the highest quality silver Akuafoil effect.

When creating knockouts in the Akuafoil mask or in the CMYK print file, please be aware that there might be a “Halo" of white around the knockout area. Below are two examples: On the left, a file with a CMYK magenta background and a knockout for the Akuafoil text. On the right, an Akuafoil background with a knockout for the CMYK text.

CMYK KNOCKOUT W/AKUAFOIL FILL

CMYK print File

AKUAFOIL KNOCKOUT W/CMYK FILL

CMYK print File

Akuafoil File
Akuafoil File

These are the printed results:

CMYK KNOCKOUT W/AKUAFOIL FILL

AKUAFOIL KNOCKOUT W/CMYK FILL

You can see the white “Halo" in-between the CMYK ink and the Akuafoil. To prevent this, grow/stroke the Akuafoil area in the mask by 1 point. This will allow the Akuafoil to bleed into the CMYK area, reducing the white “Halo" effect. You can also fill in the knockout with a color to reduce the effect further.

How do I set up a Booklet?

Booklets are a little more complex to design. Also, if you have artwork you created from another company, it might not meet our rules. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

Here are rules to follow when creating your Booklets:
• Page counts start on the cover as page 1, inside cover as page 2 and so on.
• Total bleed is .25” and total Safety is .5”. For example, an 8.5×11 booklet with bleed should be 8.75×11.25 total. This allows us to set up your crossovers properly.
• Only single pages will be accepted. NO readers OR printers spreads.
• We prefer a multipage PDF but single page files are also ok.

Our page counts for booklets start on the cover as page 1, inside cover as page 2 and so on. In the example below, you will see a 8pg booklet. Each page will show the page number. Click and hold the page corners to turn the page. This is also reflected in our templates.

Crossovers are common in booklets and require extra attention. A Crossover is an image, text or other graphic element that goes from one page to another.

Below you can see a good example of how to create crossovers:

Designers must pay close attention to the crossover design and make sure it is as seamless as possible on the finished piece. Also, do not use text or thin lines as crossovers. Big pictures work best.

Note: Due to the nature of saddle stitch binding, crossovers may not line up 100% on the final booklet.

Artwork done in Indesign or other layout software as spreads or facing pages must be saved out as single page pdfs. When creating your design, keep this in mind especially when doing crossovers. The easiest way is to create the bleed is when creating your document. Below are instructions on how to create your document in Indesign.

When creating your document, make your page size the cut size and your margin size .25” for safety for a .5” total:

Then, click the More Options button on the right. It will reveal Bleed and Slug settings below. Enter .125” as the bleed for a total of .25”:

Your Indesign document is now ready for proper booklet layout. You should see proper bleed and safety guidelines:

When your ready to export your booklet as PDF, make sure to Use Document Bleed Settings in the Marks and Bleeds menu:

After submitting your booklet, you will receive an email from our online booklet proofing system called Fourte. This system will allow you to double check all the pages and make sure they are in the correct order. There you can approve or decline and re-upload pages if you need to. You will also be able to preview your booklet as if it was printed and bound.

The Unwind Direction is simply the direction in which a label unwinds from a roll.

8. How do I set up my Roll Label file and what are the bleed requirements?

Please download our Roll Label Templates. The bleed and safety line measurements are different to other products so we highly recommend using them. Total bleed is 0.125" out from the cut line and total safety is 0.125" inside the cut line. Please ensure that the size of your artwork is the same size as the roll label that you are ordering and that it includes the correct amount of bleed. If your uploaded artwork is smaller than the required size it will not print correctly. Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

9. How do I set up and create a Bright Metallic Silver or Clear Roll Label with white ink?

With Clear Labels, you have the option to use white ink as your base color so your prints can be opaque in some areas and transparent in others. With Bright Metallic Silver, white ink will hide the foil material to make solid colors.

Similar to Spot UV masks, White Mask files are separate from your artwork files and Black color indicates where the white ink will print.

Make sure to create your mask file the same size as your color art file. This will prevent alignment issues during printing.

Note: White Masks must be made in vector form as shapes and be saved as EPS or PDF.

Use vector paths/shapes to create black color areas that will indicate where the white ink base will go. The rest of the area will represent the Metallic or Transparent label stock.

Here is a sample of a printed clear label with white ink. First how the artwork and white mask files look like, then a printed piece from these files:

Here is a sample of a Bright Metallic Silver label with white ink. First how the artwork and white mask files look like, then a printed piece from these files:

Black in the white mask file indicates where white ink will be printed. Remember the following when creating a white mask for your white ink base:

  • White ink base will be printed behind any color that’s in your Artwork Layer.
  • Areas with color but without a White Mask will be printed with color directly on the material. This means Clear stock will have transparent color and Metallic stock will have Metallic color.
  • Areas with color and a White Mask will be printed as opaque or solid color.
  • Areas with a White Mask and no color will be printed as white.
10. Are Roll Labels safe for Food Packaging?

Roll Labels are suitable for use with food products and items that may come into contact with moisture/humidity/water/condensation only when an intervening layer of FDA approved food-contact material is used. This additional layer helps the label to adhere more securely making it less likely to present issues. It is the responsibility of our customers or the end-user to ensure that use of the products conform to the relevant FDA regulations.

11. Why do square and rectangle Roll Labels have rounded corners?

All square and rectangle shapes come with industry standard 1/8 inch rounded corners for easy removal from the liner.

12. Are your Roll Lables recommended for both Indoor and Outdoor use?

Bright Silver Metallic – 2mil* stock is durable with a chemical resistant topcoat. As they are not oil and water resistant, they are recommended for indoor use.

13. Will a mask file be required?

If selecting our 5/0 option, a white mask will be required. Please refer to the question above (How do I set up and create a Bright Silver Metallic or Clear Roll Label with white ink?) for instructions on how to set up your white ink file.

14. How do I set up my file to avoid registration issues?

When any CMYK colors overlap the white mask areas, we recommend adding a stroke that’s between 1 and 2 pixels larger than the underlying white elements.

15. What’s the minimum font size recommended for use on Bright Metallic Roll Labels?

We recommend using an 8 point font or larger on all Bright Metallic Roll Labels in order to avoid thin lines which could result in poor ink adhesion or registration.

16. What lamination options are available for Roll Labels?

For some substrates, we offer either a 1.0 mil clear silk overlaminate or a 1.0 mil clear gloss overlaminate.

17. What are the benefits of lamination for Roll Labels?

Overlaminating helps maximize label protection, adding extreme temperature and abrasion resistance, as well as protection from chemical exposure. Overlaminating is also an aesthetic enhancement with both Silk and Gloss options.

18. Can Roll Labels be written on?

Both Semi-Gloss without lamination and Eggshell Felt should be free of any ink coverage to be easily written on with a ball point pen. Permanent markers work on all substrates and on laminated roll labels, if allowed to fully dry. You may not be able to write on roll labels with gel, ink or other types of pens, nor can you write with pencil. It is recommended that you test your specific application.

19. How should I design my artwork using black font?

Make sure to design with 100% K (black). Small text that is 9pt or lower must be 100% K only. Your image resolution should be 300 DPI or higher. Design vector files. Recommended file types are EPS or PDF with a vector base.

20. How should I design Barcodes and QR codes using black font?

We recommend designing Barcode and QR code images using 100% K (black) only to assure clear quality and prefer vector files.

21. How do I design vector files?

Create your artwork using a vector based software program such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or Corel DRAW. Save or export your files as EPS or PDF. Outline or embed your fonts to avoid font substitution issues. For your print ready PDF files, you can download our Save As PDF Preset tool.

What is a Perfect Bound Book?

Perfect Binding gives your booklets a more finished, refined look. With this binding method, the pages and cover are glued together at the spine with a strong, yet flexible, thermal glue.

Templates are available for both the cover and inside pages of the Perfect Bound Booklets.

Please note: Unlike our regular Booklets, the page count specified in the product name does not include the cover. E.g. “8.5 x 11, 52-Pages" will require you to upload 48 inside pages + 4-page cover file (which is always 4:0).

Can I design on the spine of a Perfect Bound Catalog?

We recommend you do not specifically design on the spine. Backgrounds or images that wrap around the book are preferred. Creating designs with text, borders or colors that are centered only on the spine may cause it to look uneven during the binding process.

Templates are available for the covers of the Perfect Bound Catalogs and relate to the number of inside pages. The normal 8.5×11 and 8.5×5.5 flat, Flyer templates can be used for all the inside pages.

Do you offer samples for Perfect Bound Catalogs?

Currently we do not offer samples for Perfect Bound Catalogs.

So go ahead and hit the streets with your brand, full speed ahead!

Are Bumper Stickers durable enough for outdoor use?

Yes, Bumper Stickers are intended for use on car bumpers and are resistant to even the harshest weather conditions. Outdoor application will not result in product damage.

Are Bumper Stickers removable?

Unlike our Low Tack Wall Graphics, our Bumper Stickers use a strong permanent adhesive. We do not recommend removing them once they’ve been applied.

What are Window Clings and how do I set them up?

1. What material are Window Clings made of?

Clear Window Clings are made of 8mil thick clear glossy material with a paper backer that will be peeled off prior to application. They are suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Ideal for POP signage on glass or other very smooth, clean surfaces. Excessive heat or cold will not allow the product to cling to the surface.

2. How do I set up and create a Clear Window Cling with white ink?

With Clear Window Clings, you have the option to use white ink as an overprint so your printed graphic can be opaque in some areas and transparent in others. This will allow for vibrant, crisp color.

Similar to Spot UV masks, White Mask files are separate from your artwork files and black color indicates where the white ink will print.

Make sure to create your mask file the same size as your color art file. This will prevent alignment issues during printing.

Note: White Masks must be made in vector format and be saved as EPS or PDF and use 100% K.

Use vector paths/shapes to create black color areas that will indicate where the white ink base will go. The rest of the area will represent the Clear Window Cling stock.

Black in the White Mask file indicates where white ink will be printed. Remember the following when creating a white mask for your white ink base:

– White ink base will be printed behind any color that’s in your Artwork Layer.
– Areas with color but without a White Mask will be printed with color directly on the material. These areas will have somewhat transparent color due to the Clear substrate.
– Areas with color and a White Mask will be printed as opaque or solid color.
– Areas with a White Mask and no color will be printed as white.
– The black for the White Mask file must be 0% C 0% M 0% Y 100% K or it will not be recognized by preflight.

Use our template to make sure everything prints the way you want.

If your Clear Window Cling is intended to be viewed from the outside of a window, please select “Mounted From Inside" when building the product. Also, the artwork should be reversed prior to submission. See images below.

3. Are Window Clings reusable?

As long as the cling remains clean it can be reused several times. We recommend that you keep the backing to protect the cling if you plan to reuse it.

4. How do I install a Window Cling?

Start with by thoroughly cleaning and drying the window or application surface. Use a spray bottle filled with soapy water to spray to completely cover the application area. We recommend 1% soap and 99% water. Carefully peel away the backing and avoid letting the cling fold over on itself. Place the side that had the backing against the surface and apply the cling to the window. Use a squeegee or credit card to squeeze out access water pressing from the center outwards. You can spray more soapy water on the back of the graphic to lubricate the surface as you are eliminating air bubbles.

Similar to Spot UV masks, White Mask files are separate from your artwork files. Black in the White Mask file indicates where white ink will be printed.

Make sure to create your mask file the same size as your artwork file. This will prevent alignment issues during printing.

Use vector paths/shapes to create black color areas that will indicate where the white ink base will go. The rest of the areas will show the Brown Kraft stock.

Remember the following when creating a white mask for your white ink base:

  • White ink base will be printed behind any color that’s in your Artwork Layer.
  • Areas with color but without a White Mask will be printed with color directly on the material.
  • Areas with color and a White Mask will be printed as opaque or solid color.
  • Areas with a White Mask and no color will be printed as white.

When and how should I scale my artwork to keep the file a manageable size?

It is not always necessary to scale your artwork. Scaling artwork can help to keep the file size manageable. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are scaling your artwork.

Vector Art
We are able to print outdoor banners as large as 150ft x 16ft, however, most software is not able to produce an artboard larger than 228". Adobe Acrobat and other PDF readers/converters are only able to view a maximum file size of 200", resulting in a loss of artwork. For this reason, it is recommended to submit files at a smaller scale than the ordered size.

Raster Art
Raster files are calculated by pixels rather than inches. The pixels are converted to inches based on the resolution of a file. The equation for the conversion is (pixels divided by dpi = inches). Raster files have a limitation of 30,000 pixels. A file that is 30,000 pixels set at 150 dpi will be 16′ (200"). If your artwork is more than 30,000 pixels, we recommend dropping your dpi or scaling down your artwork.

Resolution & Scale Charts
Our software is fully automated and expands/constricts file sizes to the ordered size. Resolution varies based on the substrate and ink used to print the final product. If your artwork needs to be scaled, we recommend using the following information as a basic guide:

Outdoor Banners:
Full scale at approximately 100dpi
Half scale at approximately 200dpi
Quarter scale at approximately 300dpi

Note: Banners larger than 15 feet will print below 100dpi

Flags:
Full scale at approximately 150dpi

Canvas:
Full scale at approximately 250dpi

Coroplast and Adhesive Vinyl
Full scale at approximately 200dpi

Foamcore:
Full scale at approximately 250dpi

PVC:
Full scale at approximately 250dpi

Indoor Banners, Car Magnets, Floor Graphics and Large Posters:
Full scale at approximately 300dpi

Table Runners:
Full scale at approximately 200dpi

Adhesive Vinyl:
Full scale at 100 dpi. vector artwork is preferred

Should I include any fonts with my files?

No, please ensure all fonts are outlined prior to file upload. If using Photoshop, please provide the flattened file only.

Should I include crop marks on my artwork so you know where to cut?

Absolutely not. Our tools give us exactly what we need to know when trimming your order. Please do not include crop marks, color bars, registration marks, or any other indicators that you do not want printed on the final piece.

I love borders on my banners and yard signs, but will that be a problem?

Yes. Borders are an issue because all substrates will vary from batch to batch making exact cuts very difficult. We recommend that you do not design your file with a border. If you do. we will not reprint an order with borders of varying widths. If you absolutely must have a border make it at least 2 inches in thickness, however, we still do not recommend borders.

If my files are in Illustrator and my artwork clearly has the required bleed necessary for your signs substrate guidelines, why do I still get an email asking me to upload new files with correct bleed?

Often times, your artwork itself is set-up correctly – however, when you save as PDF – your PDF file will only output the size you have in your document set-up. To ensure your bleed is always acknowledged, you must include the bleed on your artboard (Document Set-up) in addition to the actual size of your finished size desired. i.e. If you order a 24" x 18" Coroplast, your artwork with bleed and document set-up both should actually be 25" x 19".

My file contains a transparency, will it print OK?

No. Even the smallest transparency issue will cause problems with a printed file. It is always best to flatten any file you send to us. Outline fonts and ensure that your file is in CMYK mode for best results. We consider flattening transparency part of basic file setup and will not check for this issue. If you are uncertain how to flatten transparencies in your file or if you would like us to explain how to check for transparency problems please contact us prior to submitting an order.

May I submit multiple artwork for a single order?

At this time we can only accept 1 piece of artwork for any single job of any quantity.

What settings should I use to create my PDF in Adobe Illustrator?

Different versions of Illustrator– have different presets in the “Save PDF" dialog. The PDF presets in Illustrator CS will not save the PDF to the correct document size if any artwork extends past the edge of the document size. It will include all objects, including those that are not visible, producing a PDF with excess white space. This will produce a PDF that is the incorrect size. If not caught prior to submission it will not print as intended.

For Illustrator CS2 and above it is recommended to use the “High Quality Print" preset.

Every file is different and it is not– feasible– to include all possible issues in this FAQ. It is always best to double check your PDF for size and excess white space before uploading.

I am making a double sided directional sign with arrows. What do I need to consider to make sure the sign comes out correctly?

When using arrows on a double-sided sign, special care will need to be taken with the direction of the arrows. If you want the arrows on both sides of the sign to point the same direction when the sign is printed the arrows need to be set up in opposite directions on the production files. It’s complicated, we know. See the example illustration below.

FAQ Directional Signs

What is the radius of your rounded corner magnets?

How do I set up a fabric/canvas banner order?

For Canvas banner, your files should be in 200 – 250 DPI and CMYK. No bleed is required for us to produce a Canvas banner order but you do need to take into account your own mounting / framing needs.

Here are some rules to keep in mind when creating or checking artwork for Canvas banner:

  • Do not use borders. Stretching may occur in any mounting / framing process and the borders may become uneven.
  • We will not reprint orders that have been damaged during mounting / framing by an outside company.
  • Your artwork should measure the finished size you need and include any additional area for mounting / framing.
  • Since there are many types of mounting applications, we do not include mounting hardware with any Canvas banner print.

How do I set up a Mounted Canvas order?

Gallery Wrapped Canvas:
Wraps your artwork around the edges of the stretcher bars so you see the image on the face and sides of the frame.

Museum Wrapped Canvas:
Uses your photo on the front of the frame and a solid color is added for the edges. It is best that the color for the edges matches the artwork.

For Mounted Canvas, your files should be in 200 – 250 DPI and CMYK. They are printed and then gallery wrapped with 3/4" stretcher bars.

We require the artwork to follow our templates. This will help visualize the gallery wrap width.

Here are some rules to keep in mind when creating or checking artwork for Mounted Canvas:

  • Do not use borders. Stretching may occur in any mounting / framing process and the borders may become uneven.
  • We currently only offer gallery wrap for all our Mounted Canvas products.
  • Since there are many types of mounting applications, we do not include mounting hardware with any Mounted Canvas print.

Here is an example of how the gallery wrap will look.

If your Clear Window Cling is intended to be viewed from the outside of a window, please select “Mounted From Inside" when building the product. Also, the artwork should be reversed prior to submission. See images below.

How do I set up Contour Cut files?

For contour cut orders, two separate files must be uploaded: one regular artwork file, and one cut mask file. The cut mask file must be an all vector, PDF file uploaded at the same time as the artwork file.

We cannot accept any cut mask files that are made using a raster based program (e.g. Photoshop).

  • When being cut, the blade will follow the cut mask line you’ve created. It is recommended that you keep your perimeter cut line slightly inside the border of the image you are trying to cut out. This will avoid any obvious edges showing from your background once it is cut.
  • Do not use small/thin cut areas, or have perimeter cut lines that are too close together. At least 0.5" must separate your perimeter cut lines from each other. We will not reprint any order with perimeter cut lines that are too close to one another.
  • Your contour cut line should be a smooth fully closed path. No disconnected lines or open paths will cut. If your cut line is ragged or has any imperfections, they will show up in the final piece

Only one cut per order will be allowed. Please do not add multiple cuts in a single file.

We will not reprint any order attributed to improper file setup or layout.

General/Misc. FAQ

What is the difference between raster and vector?

Raster based artwork such as photos, or flattened artwork (from Adobe Photoshop) are made up of tiny squares (pixels) and depending on your resolution and/or final output size desired, the file could have a low quality end result. Any raster elements you wish to use should have a high enough resolution (DPI) before considering them for your large format product.

Vector based artwork such as illustrations or clip-art style elements (from Adobe Illustrator) is made with mathematical calculations, and can be scaled up to any size without losing quality. Keep in mind that any effects used in Adobe Illustrator are raster based and have transparency – this greatly adds to file size and you must have correct settings in your “Document Raster Effects Settings" to ensure best output for these effects. If you’re doing a photo-quality print on a 36" x 48" poster, and leave the raster effects settings at default 72 DPI – you may see tiny squares in your drop shadows, as opposed to a smooth shadow.

Which program do you recommend for best quality output of my order?

While it is not mandatory, we prefer Adobe formats (such as PDF) – if you’re using a program outside of Adobe, it will have to be exported from whichever program is being used as one of the following file types – PDF, JPG, or TIF – prior to uploading.

Do you print using any Spot or Pantone colors?

We only print 4 color process (CMYK). If you use Spot or Pantone colors, please have them converted to process colors prior to uploading your file.

What size are your Grommets? How far apart do you typically place them?

We use #2 grommets, they are 3/8" and brass in color. Grommets are placed in all 4 corners, or Top Corners only. Grommet are placed 1 inch from each corner. Starting point from left to right and top and bottom corners.

Do you offer double-hemming on any of your outdoor products?

In addition to sewn hems, we also utilize a hot air welding system that is far stronger than a standard sewn hem, making the need for double hemming a thing of the past.

I have a small file that I need to have recreated in vector format for a large print - what do you recommend?

There are quite a few companies that do just this – convert raster artwork to vector. There are even programs you can buy to accomplish this task. You might want to try a Google search for Raster to Vector art services.

How can you offer such low prices?

Most printing companies run individual jobs on one sheet. We will utilize the maximum square inch of the sheet by impositioning jobs together dispersing the fixed cost of a job between several projects and then we pass the savings on to you.

How do I store my banner for later use? Is there any maintenance or cleaning required?

When you are done displaying your banner – in order to maximize your future usage, you must keep it clean, dry, and in a dry cool place while it is not in use. Your outdoor vinyl banner will probably get pretty dirty from all the elements during it’s time being displayed. The best method of cleaning your outdoor vinyl banner is to lay it flat (if possible) on a clean area, table or floor. It is recommended that you use a mild dishwashing liquid and luke warm water to rinse. Do not use any harsh abrasive or petroleum type cleaners. Clean and dry each side before storing. You must ensure it is completely dry prior to roll up and storage. Any wetness left on the banner will cause mildew and may ruin some of your banner over time.

Once your banner is completely dry – roll it up with the image outward – to avoid any cracking of the printed side. Do not roll your banner super tight or super loose – this will allow for some breathing room while it is stored. Place your banner back in box and store it flat, not vertical. If it is standing up vertically, it may wilt and warp causing wrinkles over time.

How many H-Stakes do I need for my sign?

2-step H-Stake: Typically used for 24" x 18" and smaller. For signs larger than 24" x 18" we recommend using 2 separate H-Stakes. The wire gauge size used for our H-Stakes is 9 gauge.

Do you colormatch?

We do not colormatch.

How should I care for and store my 30mil Car Magnets?

Magnets are not always shipped flat, so it is highly recommended to lay them flat on the hood or roof of your car in the sun for a couple of hours before use. This will help evaporate any moisture build-up that accrued during shipment, if any, and it will help your magnets maintain a flat profile. You may want to keep them in a flat box or on a flat surface at all times and only handle them when cleaning and installing, to help maintain their flatness. We recommend you keep your magnets clean on both sides, as well as the placement area on your car door or area of your choosing must also be clean and free of oils, dust, dirt, and other build-up. It’s a good idea to take your magnets inside your home or garage away from the elements and lay them flat in a cool dry place, while not in use. You can clean your magnets with a soft moist cotton cloth with water, no abrasive cleaners. It’s recommended that you do not stand them up on their side, as they may wilt and might not lay completely flat on the surface of your car door after wilting. These suggestions are to help the longevity of your magnets.

Note: Be sure to remove the magnet once or twice per week, place it inside your home or garage away from weather elements and lay them flat in a cool dry place while not in use so as to avoid problems from excessive heat exposure.

What is the best way to install my order?

We recommend professional installation for all of our products. Take into consideration where the product will be placed and the stresses it may be subjected to, such as wind. We stand behind all of our products and will QC all orders to the best of its ability but we will not be held responsible for damages resulting from improper installation or use.

How do I apply the Wall Graphics to the surface I want and what are the recommended surfaces?

Wall Graphics are best suited for surfaces like walls, desks, laptops, and glass. Before applying, clean the surface area with a damp cloth and allow it to fully dry. If any dirt or dust particles remain, they may stick to the low-tack adhesive and reduce the number of times you can reapply the Wall Graphic.

To clean your Wall Graphic, we recommend using a soft, damp cloth on its non-adhesive side. Do not use soap, or any other abrasive cleaning agent, as it may affect the printed surface.

For outdoor applications or vehicles, please see Adhesives or Window Graphics.

Are you using archival inks and canvas for your Canvas banner / Mounted Canvas products?

We are not currently using archival media or inks for our prints.

Are there special concerns when ordering Mounted Canvas?

Torquing of stretched canvas may occur to mounted canvas due to climatic changes such as temperature, humidity, or other changing environmental conditions. The stretcher bars are made of wood and are vulnerable to changes in humidity. It is recommended that stretched canvas print be kept in a stable climate controlled environment to minimize torquing. These issues maybe more prevalent in coastal locations and near large bodies of water where temperature and humidity levels are constantly changing.

Do your outdoor banners come seamed in one or more pieces?

Depending on size and other production variables your banner may be produced in multiple pieces that are seamed together. This production variable is to our discretion.

What are Rider Signs?

Rider signs are 4mm Coroplast and are designed to sit on top, or “ride" the standard coroplast signs using 8" metal rider pins. These rider pins are optional. Just like the regular Coroplast signs, these will have a linear effect due to the corrugated flutes. The inks used are UV Cured (dried).

Shipping FAQ

What shipping options do I have?

We primarily ship with UPS and Airline Cargo. The airline is the fastest and most cost effective shipping method for orders that weigh over 50lbs. However, we can also ship FedEx, Greyhound, and US Postal Service. Simply give us your deadlines and we will work with you to get your project delivered in a timely, cost efficient manner.

My yard signs arrived, but my H-stakes have not.

We process H-stake orders separately from sign orders. Stakes and signs should both arrive on the same day but it is not uncommon for boxes shipped ground to arrive on subsequent days.

Where will my order ship from?

We have multiple production facilities. To see where your order will ship from to plan your shipping method accordingly look in the Print Job Details window when selecting your shipping method after uploading/finalizing your artwork.

Why do some of these shipping charges seem so high?

Due to the large physical size of large format products some orders may have higher than expected shipping charges. Unfortunately, there is little we can do as we are bound by the limitations set forth by our shipper, in this case UPS.

How are the Canvas Banners and Mounted Canvas products shipped?

Canvas Banners are rolled and shipped in a square tube. Mounted Canvas will ship no more than one per box to avoid damage during shipping.

How are the Polyester Banner products shipped?

Polyester Banners are folded neatly and shipped in either bags or cartons (depending on quantity ordered). While these materials are wrinkle-resistant, light ironing with low heat may be required prior to use.

Will my banner be folded or rolled?

Due to UPS shipping restrictions, banners that exceed 8′ (feet) or 96" (inches) in length will be folded for shipping. These measures are implemented to ensure the most competitive shipping rates.

The banner arrived with creases or wrinkles because it was folded for shipping.

Folding oversized banners for shipping is a common practice among large format printers, carriers are optimizing the cubic space required to move packages, so odd size shipments are becoming more costly to move through their transportation network and conveyor systems. Our shipping team will use their best judgment when it comes to packing and shipping out your supersized banner. These measures are implemented to ensure the most competitive shipping rates.

How does Airport shipping work?

Each night, our shipper takes printed material to the airline cargo facility. From there, it gets shipped to your nearest airport. Most baggage claim centers are open 24 hours a day. You are supplied with a Airway Bill tracking number a.k.a. AWB which allows you to see exactly where your package is and it’s scheduled arrival time. The slowest service is overnight, so your order typically arrives at your nearest airport the next afternoon, but you can also elect a “DASH" or PDQ to lock-in the first available flight. Typically airport charges are C.O.D. unless otherwise agreed upon when ordering. In most cities, the air cargo area is separate from the ticket counter. Please call to find out where the cargo area is located at your airport:

  • DELTA 800-DL-CARGO (1.800.352.2746)
  • US AIR 888-300-0099
  • SOUTHWEST 800-533-1222
  • AIR CANADA 800-877-5670

Technical FAQ

What is the difference between No Coating and UV coating?

No Coating is typically selected when the customer must write on the printed piece.

UV Coating is a very slick, glossy coating applied to the printed paper surface and dried on press with ultraviolet (UV) light. The slick surface of UV coating makes it eye catching, and therefore very popular for printing the covers of paperback novels. Because UV coating can cause slight variations in match colors, consulting with an ink manufacturer or printer will yield best results.

What are bleeds and do I need them?

Bleed is a printing term to describe having the color/image print directly to the edge of the paper. To do this, draw guides on the layout that are .125" from the edge all the way around. Make sure that any photographs or backgrounds that you want to bleed go clear out to the perimeter of the document, past the guidelines. After we have printed your piece, we will trim off that extra .125" all the way around and you have color all the way to the edges of your piece.

What is print tagging and does it apply to my job?

Print tagging is when a printer places a printing credit on a flyer. We put out a quality product and want credit for it! When we tag a printed piece, we will put printed by us using a 4pt font in a very obscure location. Under no circumstance do we tag business cards or reseller profiles. Tagging is optional. Select “Do not tag" in the standard options section on the price calculator when placing your order.

What if it takes longer then your advertised turnaround time?

We strive for perfection and typically “hit the mark", but sometimes things do happen that are out of our control. If it takes longer then the advertised turnaround time for your product to complete production then we will issue a credit of 10% of the printing charges, but it must be requested in writing within 3 business days from the estimated completion date. Under NO circumstances will we take responsibility for “lost promotion" time!

In order to preserve leading zeroes on your Variable Number CSV file (e.g. 001, 0001) please Format the Cells as Text before creating your numbered list.

To include leading zeros: Right-click (or control click) on the first few cells, then Choose Format Cells > Text or Plain Text. Once your cells are formatted, proceed with creating your numbered list. You should be able to see your numbering correctly before saving your document.

Note: If you close and reopen your document or look at a preview of the document, it will appear that the CSV has reverted and your leading zeroes were deleted. However, be assured that is not the case. As long as you were able to see the leading zeros at the time you saved the document, your CSV has the leading zeros. It is safe to upload your CSV and your leading zeroes will be preserved.
